Monastery

Before you, he said
with a wry grin and wide
honest but still playful eyes
I was in a monastery.
I was a monk, cloistered
from the world, and
no woman captured my heart
or stole my smile
or lay grinning, naked with me
or held me, before you.
I was in a monastery, he joked.
And of course, so was I.
But the pictures and the scars
from our imagined other lives
we lived, before meeting,
tell a different story.
The people we still love and
the baggage we still carry is
sometimes, too honest.
Let’s keep it simple.
Let’s keep it sweet.
Before you, it was a monastery
because before you, I was caged
and you have set my heart free.

Thankful

From last Thanksgiving, but I’m thankful still.

Cytherean Dreams

On this day,
I’m thankful for my children
growing faster now
too fast, and
I want to stop time
with them small
but I’m so proud
of the strong, gracious,
inquisitive and empathetic
young women
they’re becoming.

On this day,
I’m thankful for my parents
all four of them
who’ve guided me
and tried their best
to impart their wisdom and love
even as they struggle
through through their own
challenges and triumphs.

On this day,
I’m thankful for the women
who support me and listen
and navigate through the world
on their own paths
but always happy to travel
with me and cheer me on.

On this day,
I’m thankful for the men
who’ve loved me and held me
given me the secure knowledge
of my worth and
the warmth of knowing
they will be there,
if I fall.

On this day,
I’m thankful most of all
for my…

50 Reasons Not To Date A Poet

Hits home in so many ways…I guess I actually am a poet.

Betty Generic

wpid-IMG_20130925_192158.jpg

It may sound romantic, but in search of that elusive metaphor, poets can be somewhat  “eccentric.”

  1. If you date a poet everyone will think you are the jerk they are writing about.
  2. You will be the jerk they are writing about.
  3. They have an unnatural affection for book stores and office supply stores.
  4. They have deep conversations with Animals, Clouds, and Grecian Urns.
  5. Excessive use of  “poetry hands.”
  6. Excessive abuse of  “poetic licence.”
  7. Excessive use of  “melancholy.”
  8. Excessive use of  “dramatic emphasis.”
  9. They collect obscure words that have not been in circulation for at least 100 years or more.
  10. They insert these antediluvian words into conversations just to rebel.
  11. They think children’s books are sublime.
  12. They refuse to care where the remote is.
  13. All of their furniture are positioned around windows, for them to stare out for hours at a time.
  14. Your parents will think they are possessed.
  15. They are possessed.
  16. You…

Chasm

Last line of the chapter – “The mystic quest in Judaism is the effort to bridge the abyss between God and the world by healing the rift within God.” David S. Ariel

Cytherean Dreams

The air is thick today
swimming through pain
from last year
two years
when the rifts
became canyons
insurmountable and filled
with sharp crags
making passage through
impossible.
Even for me.
I’ve traversed pools
of lava, burning
anger from years
of lies and betrayals
and come out unscathed.
I’ve leapt through
years of time
to bring a star
back into its orbit
and rejoice in its
illuminating glow
once again.
I’ve travelled across oceans
to heal and bring
the purity of water
to refresh the broken
for the long road ahead.
But this chasm
is beyond my powers
and I just sit at the edge
watching my tears
fall into the depths.

Challenge

I want something
I’ve never had, not
really, I’m sorry
to those I hurt
by saying this truth.
I’ve never had a
true partnership
an equal on all levels
a friend who is
also a lover whose love
lifts my soul into
higher planes
and whose friendship
grounds me in this world
gives me strength to fuel
my work here,
up there.
So this is my challenge
to myself, and to you.
To put aside
what I know already
is beyond incredible
our nearly holy rapture
and focus instead
on the friendship and
partnership and
build those first,
fuel the flames
burst our light
to the heavens
for when, if
we come together
in love again.
