Playgounds

My life has been measured
by playgrounds
for eight years
bringing my baby
when she could first
sit, to swing
in the baby holders
then older,
breaking the hearts
of little boys
who always wanted to
chase her, then
later, with two
one girl running,
the other eagerly
following with her eyes
trying to run
before she could walk
determined
to outpace everyone.
Now, the older
pushes the younger
in her swing,
as they sing
out of tune and time
at the top of their lungs.
And now
we always see people
we know, from all
of our communities.
My girls know
who they are
and that they belong,
here in our playgrounds.
